I have a friend visiting from England. Looking at this magazine from AAA they had a article about a tour of Sam Maloofs house. I didnt realize it was so close to me. So I made reservations for a tour (its the only way you can get in and they only take 6 people per tour) we took a drive out there.
I must say the house it self was nice. You can tell Sam built it himself. He wasnt a carpenter but he was a heck of a wood worker. They would not let us take photos of inside the house for whatever reason. But what I really liked was his window casing he used a large dovetail for the joinery . What I also thought was pretty cool was he made his own door knobs/latches/handles. Sorry i couldnt get a photo of them.
The photos below are of his workshop which is still be used and furniture is still being made by his oldest employee (30 years) and his employees son. I have included photos of his gallery and got to sit in one of his chairs that to buy would cost $20,000. Also his storage room for his lumber mostly walnut. But even though Sam passed in 2009 he still has ton of lumber stored waiting to be used. Im guessing close or more than $100,000 worth.
What surprised me was the amount of screws he used to assemble his furniture. Anyway, enjoy
