It's been quite some time since I've had need of booting up a computer with access to the so-called "safe" mode. But a buddy gave me a fairly recent XP Pro machine but the monitor I have doesn't support the screen resolution that he had it configured to. I seem to remember one of the Function keys or function key in combo with Ctrl or whatever would allow the OS to be started in low res VGA mode. But I can't remember which key or combination of keys. I know there are some even nerdier folks than me hangin' around here so thought I'd see if one of yaz had some idea.

Depends on the machine. I keep forgetting which is which, but one of the "F" keys should work. Keep punching the chosen "F" key (on/off, on/off rapidly) as the machine starts up. Try F2 first, and then F8, then your guess, but one of them will work. Have to re-start for each trial.
If I remember XP right, you can also get to it by putting "msconfig" or maybe msconfig.sys in the run box. It will get you to a boot tab. (if I remember right). _________________ Jess

F8 is your friend, for XP Pro or Home Edition. Works on Compaq/HP, and Dell for sure.
Hope this helps.

OK, let's put this thread out to pasture.
I broke down and plugged in one of the old CRT monitors that came with the puter and got the res. setting changed to where the flat screen would display but - it's simply too grainy to use for a decent CAD station. That box and all the other accoutrements that fell my way are going to the neighbor's kids. Two desktop machines and one laptop are enough for anyone my age! (hehe)
Many thanks for the support none the less. You folks are the best. _________________ Nullum Gratuitum Prandium
