You glued up laminations of contrasting wood to be sliced down to use for inlays/banding.

Given your affection for your new lathe, I'll guess that your putting together a segmented piece. Although, the angles don't exactly suggest that. Confused

Angle cut turning blanks to give a parrabolic curve look when turned.
