It looks like some kind of sprial saw blade on a string or wire and rolled up on a spool!
I can't say I've ever seen anything like it. I cant understand what kind of machine would use it, so it must be a hand operated item.

If anyone has seen something like this she/he must be from another part of the universe! (grin)
Looks like a closeup shot of the end of a roll of low pile carpet. _________________ Nullum Gratuitum Prandium

OK, Ralph, I still don't know, but - once it's been solved I beg you to post the rest of the picture. _________________ Nullum Gratuitum Prandium

Hey Ralph,
I think that you're getting way too much mileage from a recycled puzzle. I know that Dennis has seen this one before, and playing on his frail memory is just poor sport.
If someone doesn't clear this up soon, I'm going to spill the beans.

I was amazed that nobody got this one...
Here you go, This is the answer...
It is a laminate trimmer with a gap to prevent the glue wrapping around the bearing. The cutter is also set at a slight angle to form a chamfer on the edge of the laminate to reduce the chance of it getting chipped.

Holy cow, Ralph ... it's amazing how different, for lack of a better term, something as mundane as this is practically unrecognizable at the closer than macro scale. Yeah, Tom, I've something similar but my bits are generally a lot messier than that once I'm done with a laminate project! (grin)
Great mind stretcher, this one. _________________ Nullum Gratuitum Prandium

Actually, all modesty aside, I did get it but thought id seen it before so did not tip my hat. So I guess I didn't get it did I? modesty or not....
Is this an old one Ralph, or did I just see my gummed up old cutters in my mind's eye?
Soaking them in turps and then re oiling works well.
Cheers, and thanks for all the fun!
