Ok so I have done too many successful finishes to list here during my woodworking years. That said yesterday I sprayed the first coat of General Finish waterbase clear over a door THAT I had applied a solvent based stain ON 24 hours earlier. Today I was apply some painters tape on a small area of the door and when I pulled the tape off-it lifted the clear and the stain off right down to the bare oak. Yes I did totally prep the wood before staining (180/150 sanding, dust vacuum and tack cloth). I have used the same process and the same stain with the same waterbase over it many times in the past with no such problems. So a few of my woodworker contacts said it happened because i waited too long after applying the stain before I sprayed the clear. They said clear should be applied over stain within a few hours or delamination problems will occur. I have always thought the stain required more time to cure before sealing it with clear. If any of you have experience with all this ...it would be so helpful. Thanks for your time. Jim in Nashville, TN

Sounds like a contaminated c surface. Maybe glue or something
like a wax or silicone.

Sometimes strange things happen.

Hey Jim,

I'm not clear on this from your post, have you tried this combination before?

I ask because stains do not generally contain but just a trace of resin, if any, for bonding to the wood. They are mostly comprised of pigments and solvent. They rely on the fineness of the pigment particles and the solvent to penetrate the wood. That the water based clear coat adhered to the stain is testament to the quality of that bond. The solvent based stain likely prevented the water based top coat from penetrating the wood and holding the stain in place.

If the stain didn't penetrate the pores of the wood, then you probably have a contaminant problem as Duan suggested. If you have any kind of silicone in your shop, then that's a good bet to be the problem. Silicones can spread out to only a single molecule layer and be an effective barrier.

The only way that I'm familiar with to remove silicone is with strong detergent. Not very useful on wood, but it works on machine surfaces and hand tools.

Good luck,
Tom

Ive done that before. Sometimes you need to wait longer than 24 hrs for the solvant based stain to completely dry. Once Ive waited 4 days. Could be you just didnt wait long enough.

This was GF clear over a oil based stain
