I found a stash of old Tri-m-ite silicon carbide sandpaper that got pushed in back of something for years (like 20+).
It's very brittle - if you try to fold it, it just snaps. I've tried soaking it, but once dry it's brittle again.
It's nice paper, so I'd like to be able to use it. Any thoughts?

Hey drstrip,

You might try a trick used by veneer workers to soften dry and brittle veneers. Mix a solution of glycerin and alcohol and put it in an ordinary pump sprayer. Spray a fine mist on the back of the paper and let is soak in a good long time.

I've no idea if this will work on sandpaper, but it does the trick on dried out veneers.

Good luck,
Tom

Maybe masking tape applied to the back or 2 sided tape and use a sanding block????

From what I could read, this solution is intended to soften veneers so you can flatten them. The intent is to let them dry in the press, hence the alcohol. Instead I used water and glycerin. The paper still cracks a little more than new sandpaper, but at least it doesn't break. Bottom line - it's usable again.
Tip o' the hat to Tom -
