WoW is the first word that comes outta me when I see another of these posts  So....you will have to mock up the assembly when you fit the trunnion? Then when all the pieces are complete, do you plan to assemble it there at your place?? or transport to San Antonio for final assembly? I'm planning on driving over when it gets there...gotta see this thing in person!!

Don,
When the trunnion collar is completed, I will return to San Antonio to make sure it fits.
Then I think I can finish the carriage in about 4 weeks.
I will assemble it totally in my carport and load it on a trailer when I'm ready to deliver it.

At the Alamo, I will use the equipment provided by them to set the barrel on my carriage.
It will be displayed outside for a number of years before being moved inside I am told.

I really can't stand the idea of it being outside.
We all know what the weather does to anything wood in the long term.

Not my choice. :(

DITTO on the idea of leaving it outside...but, it may serve to give the oak a chance to gray and gain some realistic patina. Surely is a fine statement for your craft(s)! Hope I can know when you're gonna be there...would love to shake your hand and take a few pics of the project with you in the frame!
Thank you so much for sharing this build....can't tell you how inspiring it is!

Don,
It is a little premature to say when I will deliver the carriage but if I had to guess, I would say around mid July.

You might suggest that they put it under a roof (carport type thing) to keep the sun and rain off it. Don't know what kind of bugs y'all got there, but those might be a problem also.

Still working on the trunnions. A very slow process.

Step downs.

First trunnion ready for final grinding.

Hand forged handles, rings, and eye bolts with hand done threads.

Iron work is dirty work!

Helluva post! Working with steel seems like another world away from woodworking... and you seem to have mastered both!
Please keep the posts coming!! can't wait for the next one

One trunnion off the Bridgeport mill ready for grinding the final contour.
This only took me 35 minutes. :D

The next trunnion is going on the Bridgeport.

Here is what I got done today.

After cutting the piece of 12" pipe in half and cutting the oval shapes out with a cutting torch last night, my job today was grinding the shapes so the trunnion would slide in.

I used a grinder all day. My teeth are still chattering. :-?

In the end, it turned out like I wanted them to.
Now, I'm waiting on the next trunnion to be contoured on the Bridgeport.
Probably will take until the end of the month. :(

I really hope all of this works.

This is where i currently stand.
The entire carriage is complete except for the four transoms that connect the two cheeks.
I need the trunnion spread to do that.

The last trunnion contour surprised me by getting finished yesterday. I ground it out today.

The next step is cut the half pipes to final length and weld on the flange. I will tack weld the trunnion into the hole in the half collar.
I will return to San Antonio and verify that the collar fits.
I really, really hope it does. A great deal of labor and cost has gone into this thing.

The carriage as it stands in my shop now.
Also the trunnions ready to be tacked into the collar pieces after they are cut to final length.

So True, Ron! We're looking at a (no too) small fortune in labor & material awaiting the final stages of a 'one of a kind' project to be put on public display for the whole world to critique! But....I doubt Zulu is stressed..... what he has accomplished is astounding and anyone who doesn't/can't appreciate that does not deserve to see it!
Thanks, Zulu. Now I'm getting some clarity on what you're up against with the final measuring....that steel leaves no room for errors and th fit is critical to the entire project. Somehow I have no doubt it's gonna work out just right. Thanks for the update!

Stressed out??

Me??
No way!

Image

The Alamo gets a million visitors a year.
This will be on display for hundreds of years.
Why would that cause me any stress?

You do realize that there will be more projects like this in the future, right? Fame has it's downside. :D

Just heard that my wheels might ship in two weeks.
This is the only picture I have been able to get out of them.

I've never seen wheels like that. But it makes sense given the weight they'll have to support. Or are those only the hubs?

 Gene, those are just the hubs!
The wheels will be spoked wheels 5' 6" tall.

The collar is finished!!!
Now I will schedule a trip to the Alamo to ensure fit.
I hope it fits!!

These were cut out on the PlasmaCam.
Capsquare flats, capsquare keys, axle washers, decorative washers, pintle plate top and bottom, and the bottom half of the leveling screw plate.

The trunnion collar. It is just tack welded until I'm sure it fits.

Seems to be a pretty sleepy forum these days. I have been working on the capsquares.
I am off to The Alamo tomorrow to make sure the collar fits.

Wish me luck!!
