I have tons of red oak in all sizes I milled and kilned from my property. So due to budget this has to be my wood of choice for the kitchen cabinetry in our new home we are building. That said my wife wants a near white finish with dark glaze in the profiles only. I’ve done this before using maple or birch and it turns out beautiful. However red oak has a very open grain on the finished face no matter how much sanding. Regardless yesterday I sanded my first door piece 80/100/150 and then shellacked to close pores and then 320. Next I sprayed a white base primer. And then a clear coat tinted with my final white color. After 24 hour dry time I brushed on vandyke dark gel glaze and immediately wiped off. Of course the glaze accented the profiles as hoped for but it also filled every area of open grain...thus making the door pretty ugly after wipe off-not the pristine white background we had hoped for. I did try wiping it again with mineral spirits -no change. So my question; is there a pre-coating method or product that could be sprayed on and scuffed to close all the grain before I started my final finish steps? Thanks for any advice. Jim in Franklin, TN

Hey Jim ....

There's a local finishing company here in the Northwest that makes a product called paste wood filler. I've used it on white ash with fairly good results. Here's some info -

https://www.dalyswoodfinishes.com/PDF/specs/S-PWF.pdf

There may be similar products by other mfrs. of course.

Hope this helps.

Hey Jim,

This is going to sound strange but, try using spackle, you know drywall joint compound. You spread it on thinly and work it into the pores. Then sand and seal with shellac as before. It's cheap, and easy, and it works.

Good luck,
Tom

btw- If you skip the shellac and go to a water based primer you run the risk of it swelling the joint compound. However it will be more sand-able.

If you use the prepared joint compound that comes in a bucket, you will have the problem Tom warns about. However, if you get the dry stuff in a sack that you mix with water, it will not swell once dry. It is harder to sand than the stuff in a bucket though.

Durams rock hard water putty fills the grain in oak well, But I have an immense dislike of painted wood.

i've struggled with fish eye on red oak - kinda the same problem - open grain pits - use paste wood filler before final sanding

timber mate a water base wood filler can be used to fill grain. If your just going to spray them white, then GF makes a white undercoat which will help and matches their Enduro white poly.

Check out http://homesteadfinishingproducts.com/. Jeff Jewitt is the owner, and he's the guy that wrote the Taunton book on wood finishing. He's also very responsive to email if you have questions.

Have a look at these: http://homesteadfinishingproducts.com/products-we-offer/paste-wood-fillers/.
