I got this mahogany slab with live edge for doing some work for a friend of mine. Been trying to decide what to do with it for a long time. Finally just started flattening and putting a finish on. Whattya think?? Maybe a 3 legged side table or bedside table?? https://www.amazon.com/photos/share/3PV ... 6cksiASUUw

Ideas??

Thanks

Hey Don,

I think that I would re saw it into two or maybe three pieces and recombine them to make a demilune table.

Cheers,
Tom

Good idea, Tom! The thought did cross my mind but I am really hoping to keep the live edge intact and [I]thought[I] That might cause it to come off. But now that I see the figure that was hiding all this time...it might outweigh that hope. We have a bandsaw at our SDFWWA shop that is up to such a task...may just do something like that...maybe just resew once & see what the book match looks like. I'll post when I do it!

I was going to suggest a demilune as Tom has above ... but apparently I don't log in enough to remember my password.

At any rate ... using the second photo ... if resawn from left to right ... then flipping from right to left ... you should get an interesting face in the bookmatch.

How about making some shelfs?

Hey Ron,

I like your idea best. I guess that I really should have suggested that myself as I hate legs on tall skinny tables, specially in hallways and entryways.

Hey Don,

Keep us updated on your progress, this is starting to get interesting. :P

Cheers,
Tom

If you want people to see it, you might think vertically and not just horizontally. How about a thin bookmatch in a frame for a wall hanging? Not everything needs to have a function. It would also give you an opportunity to practice some French Polish. :)

WoW...now ya'll got my head spinning! But I LIKE it...keep em coming. Did decide to resaw and bookmatch but the 'shelf idea would facilitate more gifts!!...and....with the right angle cut opposite the live edge...possible corner shelf ideas too. I'm going to resaw it by the weekend and will update with pics then
Thanks, Gene. Had one other suggestion just to emphasize beauty of the grain without mandating function.

Don

Tom,

After I visited sam Maloofs gallery and took some photos of his work gave me all sorts of ideas and inspiration. That shelf was one of them. The photo was from Sams gallery

Don, if ya want some nice iron shelf brackets for the shelves check out Van Dykes Restorers. Ive bought some stuff from them before. I like them bc a lot of places sell shelf brackets but most of them are cast, these are iron
