It seems to be good practice when working wood, to start with making the rough lumber straight flat and square. There are lots of cats in this scheme. When using tools, then, making them " straight, flat and square" should also be good practice. Edged tools are the backbone of many shop procedures and here is an article about making the plane and chisel edges perform as well as possible. When the tools perform optimally, then the goof is operator error
