mosquito season yet here in Minnesota so there is still time. How about where you are? It takes time and some effort to attract a community of Purple Martins and also an attractive home for them. Having them around is a wonderful thing because of their voracious appetite for mosquitos and other flying bugs. Here is an article and a simple plan obout the subject.

We've got loads of Grosbeaks and finches here but Martins aren't native, sad to say. We don't provide housing but do keep a feeder well stocked with black oil sunflower seeds that all our feathered visitors seem to prefer. Peanuts for the Jays and ground squirrels, of course.

DENNIS S: Thanks for the heads up about no purple martins. TMS also sent me a heads up which I have attached and he sent this URL along for bat houses which will help with a mosquito population

Dennis S and TMS thanks , both of you for reading and responding !!!

Hey Newtooth,

We don't have purple martins here in the Pacific Northwest, but we do have
bats. Bats eat an incredible number of insects, right about dinner time.

Cheers,

I always make a point of reading your posts, NT. Don't always have anything of interest to add but I do read them faithfully. Much appreciate your taking the time to find all this interesting stuff.

Yes indeed, we have lots of bats here in rural Skagit Co. Amazingly they somehow find a way to wiggle in between the shakes I have as siding on my shop. I know they're there only from the droppings on the ground. At first I thought we had a huge infestation of mice but an exterminator pointed out the droppings were actually from bats. At dusk, while it's still light enough to see them, we enjoy watching them fly about above the yard. Easy to tell them from birds since they flap their 'wings' continuously and don't seem to glide at all.

Summer fun in the country!
