Hey Folks,

*With apologies to Yogi Berra

Well, here we go again with a pair of Roorkhee Chairs, again modeled by the inimitable Peggy Tzu.

Image

Significant differences in these chairs include Wickett & Craig English Bridle Leather, and doubled & hand stitched arm rests. As before, the wood is African Sapele, and the finish is garnet shellac with dark wax.

Wicket & Craig produce what I think are the finest leathers in North America; they have been tanning hides since shortly after the Civil War. The investment in this leather for these chairs is nearly double what I’ve paid in the past. Additional labor is also required as these vegetable tanned leathers are not “shot through” with color, so every freshly cut edge needs dying and burnishing. Finally, I’ve upped the game yet again by doubling and hand stitching the armrests. All this means that the chairs are more expensive, but I think that it’s worth it; I hope you think so too.

Cheers,
Tom

BTW- The chair on the left is sold, the one on the right is available at the shop.

Beautiful workmanship, Tom! Definitely worth the extra.....just shouts quality!

Looks like that Chris Schwarz fellow might have had a bit of 'worth knowing' somewhere back there!

Thanks for sharing! Love your inspirations.

Great work as usual, Tom. Do you do your own stiching/sewing?

Thanks Guys,

These chairs are fun to make, but I'm a bit burnt out on them; time to move on to other projects.

Hey Dennis,

Yes, I do the hand stitching myself. It's a simple saddle stitch using two needles. It's not difficult, but it is time consuming as there are a number of procedures (grooving, punching holes, then stitching). You also have to pay attention, so although punching is gnawingly boring, one misstep, and the piece is ruined.

Cheers,
Tom

Tom,
Instead of punching the holes, could you drill them?
When I'm doing something like that, I run a pointed, wheeled, indexer down a straight edge.
It marks all the holes with a dimple. It's made for leather.
Then I drill all of them on the drill press with a very small bit.
It actually works pretty well and is quick.

Hey Zulu,

This leather is just thin enough to punch, any thicker and I would have to drill. The punch has four tines so the spacing is uniform. It also makes a diamond shaped hole which gives the stitches a better look. Grooving the leather before hand makes it easier to line up the punch.

When I started up my shop I never expected to be doing so much leather work.

Cheers,
Rom
