What do you all use to sharpen your planer knives and chisels? How fine of grit do you use?

I currently have Japanese water stones and I am pretty new to sharpening.

Thank you,
Jon

I don't sharpen my planer knives - I send them out to a sharpening service. For chisels and plane irons I have a Tormek slow speed wet grinder but do hone them on waterstones and leather strop. Be sure to take time to flatten and polish the back side of both chisels and plane irons to eliminate mfr'g grinding marks. Ideally you want the back side to have a mirror finish.

Planer blades can be tricky unless you have a jig or something to maintain the correct angle. I made this one that will sharpen 2 blades at a time using up to 2000 grit wet/dry paper on a sheet of glass. Works pretty good, but takes time. In the first pic you're looking at the bevel side. To sharpen, you just put that side down on the paper. The 2 blades must be at exactly the same depth and angle in the jig, so making the jig requires precision. If you have a 3 blade planer you could probably make something similar to handle 3 at a time.

Here it is in a different pose.

I have both the standard and the narrow set for sharpening irons, and chisels and I use 220, 1000, 4000 and 8000 wet stones to get a mirror finish.

My planer knives are disposable. I could probably sharpen them once or twice, but i's not worth the headache.
