The pad on my Porter-Cable ROS is completely shot. Since I don't want to spring $25 or so for a replacement, what's the general opinion on just gluing on some regular velcro hook on the face of the existing pad?

Hey Gene,

All my ROS and my drum sander use hook and loop abrasives. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Cheers,
Tom

GENE: If the pad is really clogged up, go to your local pharmacy/drugstore and find a "nit comb" they run about $4. It' a comb with ultra fine teeth that is used for kids with head lice. Use the comb to dress the pad on your sander. Use a really low attack angle and lift the comb as you go across the pad. You'll have to pull the debris off the comb a lot but it will clear the pad really well. If that' not going to work for you then make sure that the surface is really smooth and cover it completely with the hook fabric. HTH. FWIW this is a tip I found a long time ago, tried it, it works well on all kinds of Velcro hook material.

Don't think a comb would do any good. Looks melted. What kind of glue would you recommend?

GENE: After sanding all the hook material off and had a perfectly smooth surface on the sander, I'd spray the surface with or roll on or paint the surface with contact cement and the back of the fabric also. Following the mfg rec's for temp time and pressure bond the two together and hang on for cure time even if the bond is instant, use will generate heat and friction which may degrade the bond. Using a sanding disk for a template and MAYBE an old Forster bit of the right size and a hammer to punch the dust holes. The contact cement should be reversible with lacquer thinner if needed. Again HTH

I was going to suggest the same as DaddyGloves. Assuming your existing pad is hook & loop already. Simple replacement if that's the case.

Already tried Lowes, HD, and on-line. Replacements for the H&L pad on the P-C run $20 and up. I ain't spending that much on a ROS that only cost me about $30 new. I'll get the hook fabric and glue it on. :)

Klingspor's Woodworking Shop carries hook and loop disks with a PSA backing to rejuvenate your sander. Unfortunately their website is poor and I can't find them now, but they exist and work well. You just need to make a smooth surface for the disk to stick, which I've done either by cleaning off the old worn hook and loop, or by filling it with glue.

No. Don't need disks, got a big stack of various grits. I'm talking about the pad. Found one today locally, so the search is over. P/N is DW4388. Fits both the DW and Porter Cable 5" 8 hole discs that mount with 3 screws.

GENE: # is not a sanding disk, it is a PSA hook replacement pad that adheres to the existing sanders hook disk after that disk has been smoothed.

Looked it up. That's not what I needed. No holes. Thanks for trying tho.
