of dimensions and sizes starts with you. You should have an arsenal of reliably accurate tools to use while working. I feel that transferring sizes from one piece to the next is the most accurate however the first piece needs to be laid out and marked up first. Here is a URL which gives a primer/review of measuring tools. Read and explore, find a new cat skin, reaffirm your "I always do that" technique.
