Having had some experience with hurricanes, one of the things that usually accompany them is short lived tornados popping up in outer bands many miles from the eye. They are normally rain shrouded, and you can't see them coming. Haven't heard any reports of this with Matthew, but it wouldn't surprise me if there were a few. We had a few near me when Katrina came thru, nearly 200 miles from the Gulf.
