Well my old 4x36 bench sander died today, so I'm in the market for a new one. I have about $50 worth of new belts so don't want to change sizes. I've looked at Grizzly, Ryobi, and a couple others. What's a good 4x36 combo belt/disc benchtop sander for under $200?

I'm not highly impressed with Grizzly tools, Gene, especially the larger ones. However if you don't use your sander as hard as I do, it might fit the bill. They are, admittedly, cost wise, quite competitive.

No experience with Ryobi.

GENE: RIKON ? What happened to your old reliable? Motor? Bearings? Check either RIKON or WOODCRAFT online for details and shipping. HTH

Motor still runs. Sounds like bearing in the drive end. Can't get it apart to verify. It's a cheap chinese Delta bought in 2003, and has a lot of miles on it. Never did really like it. I did look at the Rikon ( 50-112), and like the design - especially the low mount disc. Has other nice features also.

The other one that is in the running is the Porter-Cable PCB420SA, which has a 3/4hp motor, and direct drive for both the disc and the belt. I've seen a couple reviews tho that it has a problem with the motor overheating and failing.

Settled on the Porter-Cable. $179 @ Lowes.

Picked it up yesterday. Seems a pretty solid machine. 3 year warranty. Weighs about 40lbs, mostly steel and cast iron construction. Ran a few sticks on it and no problems. Good dust collection, easy tracking & table adjustments. Doesn't bog down (3/4hp, 5amp). 8"disk. Workpiece clears the motor housing when running long/wide pieces on the belt (dust shroud is removable, but it still picks up about 90% of the dust). I like it so far, and if it lasts as long as my old Delta, I'll be happy. :)
