Looks like I'm back in the endgrain cutting board business for a few weeks. Started getting orders for them last week out of the blue, from local folks who want them for Xmas gifts. This is nice, since I haven't been out in the shop for much of anything since early Spring, and it will bring in a little money. :-D

NO idea how many you plan on making BUT you have almost enough time !! They demand tons of planning / accurate table saw cuts / tons of clamps / the fun of glue squeeze out !! Be that as it may it is art work to say the least & then design additions once totally assembled if desired. Please use food safe products for the finish.

PLEASE post pictures along the way. Above all **** have FUN ****

I gotta get busy on some, too, Gene. A local knife maker lost his source of boards to sell with his kitchen knives and I've been meaning to send him a sample of my work to see if he would like to add them to his line.

What's your fav' species of timber for your boards? I prefer Euro Beech and/or Eastern Maple.

Don't really have a favorite. Normally use what grows here. Walnut & Maple's mostly, have used Pecan a few times.

Thanks. I've made a couple dozen boards in the last 10 years or so. :)

Hi Gene, hope all is going well in your area. I moved from my place in Alabama in June to be closer to my relative here in NW Fl. Check my recent post, (After a long absence.). As soon as I can get my shop in working order, I'll be back to making cutting boards. All I can find here in NW Fl for wood is cypress. So I may have to ride back to visit my sawyer in Alabama. Will need walnut and cherry, maybe some pecan if he has it. Deffy need to pic up some oak also. Might need to make other items. I can get cedar at a place closer to me for some small chests etc. Also going to pick up some cypress, want to check out how that works into my plans.

For simple endgrain boards there's a small software program I use that is a big help. Generates the cut list, picture of pattern, etc. Takes a lot of the guesswork out of it. Free.

CBDesigner: http://www.lastalias.com/cbdesigner/

As far as I know, it's the only program of it's kind out there.

Here's a screen shot of one design I'm making using the above program. Click on the image for full size:

Finally got all the sticks cut to rough size. Did the glue up on the first of the batch today. The really ugly stage. These will be 17"x12"x1" when finished. Should have enough left overs for a few small cheese/snack boards also.

Mornin' Gene Looking great !! Thanks for posting ! I used some of the cut off pieces to make cheese trays etc , mind you these articles are all face rather then end grain, VERY visible knife intrusion on face grain over the end grain after about ten years of use !! Now sit back & enjoy your efforts put forth.
