Went whole hog and installed a INCRA Mast-R-Lift with the PC 75182 router motor.
Was using this to pattern rout a "Puzzle Chair" and about half way done (3 pieces)
found the router plate very hot (my first experience with a metal plate). Too hot to lay my hand on.
Of course I shut down and felt the router and it was warm by not too hot.
The bit was a Freud 1/2 inch pilot bit and it was also hot.
I have experienced hot bits but with a phenolic plate no heat there.

Is the metal plate getting hot typical? Do I have a problem (situation)?

Thoughts and recommendations please.

Thanks

Duan

That's anew one on me. Rediculous question I'll admit but - is there any part of the collet touching the baseplate? Maybe post a photo of the setup??

Hey Duan,

The cooling fan on your router blows down(up) towards the bit. If you have a close insert, and the router is up close to the base, you may not have enough room to allow cool air to mix with the hot cooling air before it hits the metal base. I've noticed my aluminum lift gets hot if my dust extraction air need adjusting. Do you have extractor air blowing over (or through) the lift?

Cheers,
Tom

I can remember some time back this was a common occurrence. It happened to me with a 7518 motor, the bearings right at the collet got very hot. I contacted PC about (this was probably 7-8 years ago) and they told me me that's not unusual, the bearings were new and would "break in". Mine never did get to where it would run without getting hot, I replaced it with a Milwaukee. This was before all the ownership changes took place at PC, and the 7518 I had was USA made (I think).

Thanks for the replies.

Tom, I think you may have it. not enough air circulation.

Fred, I will keep that in mind.

Thanks
Duan
