I turn a few pens. Mostly for me and family.
I like to experiment with something other than wood. I have one I made the blanks by mixing walnut sawdust, the metal shavings from a key making machine and a wood hardner. It is beautiful, but it was hard on the wood tools.
I have another with coffee beans and white rice.
A friend whose father was a jeweler has some tiny garnet chips and wants me to try to mix them with something and
turn her a pen. I'm thinking the garnets are rocks and I will never be able to do it.

Your thoughts and advise please?

MIGHTY MITE: I agree that you probably cannot "turn " garnet. Could you turn a pen blank and inlay the garnet chips into/onto the blank then build a thick coat of clear over all? Alternately turn a very very slim pen blank and then cast resin around the blank with the chips embedded into the resin.

abrasive waterjet cutting uses garnet mixed with the water to improve cutting in hard materials like stainless steel. Probably says everything you need to know about the effect on your tools.

I think you can buy pen blanks with various materials imbedded in them.
I believe they use stone or whatever incased in plastic or epoxy and although you can see the stone, the actual lathe tools never (at least they are not suppose to) touch the harder materials.
Considering that I've never turned a pen and don't even own a lathe, I'm probably wrong however. :)

Thanks all. I may try something with the casting resin. Looks like I can buy it locally at Hobby Lobby.
