Here are a couple of guides to mixing shellac. One is for mixing from flakes with alcohol and the other is for changing pre mixed to a different cut.

The subject line sure caught my eye!

Another question I have is what are the advantages/disadvantages of mixing your own shellac from flakes? What comes to mind immediately is that you only mix as much as you need for the job at hand since it does have a shelf life.
