Not sure how many of you have this sander, but mine was getting really hard to move the platen up and down. I've had mine since they were first introduced, so perhaps it might make sense that it needs a serious cleaning. I was concerned the teeth in the bevel gears were breaking off, which is a real hassle as Delta no longer sells the gears (!). I sucked it up and took the thing apart - removing the platen, spinning out the leadscrews, removing the spherical bearings. I cleaned everything in solvent and wire brushed what I could. Then I applied a dry PTFE spray lube and reassembled. The one thing you need to watch out for is the orientation of the body in the spherical bearing. It's not symmetric and it's not obvious which is the correct orientation. Other than that, it's pretty simple to take apart and reassemble. Now it moves easily and smoothly.

Oh, and the other nasty part of the task is removing and replacing the motor - it weighs a ton.

So, if your sander is getting really fussy, set aside a couple of hours for an overhaul. I laid mine down on it's side on top of a Workmate. Probably a two-man job, but since I didn't have anyone around, I did it myself. Perhaps not the smartest thing to do, but do-able nonetheless.

Good advice, DR. I don't have that particular sander but mine's getting a bit stiff with old age as well. Time for a little TLC I would suspect.

It sames that most manufactures no longer want to provide parts for there machinery, It also appears that Delta no longer wants to be in the high quality machinery business.

P.S.
Where is everybody nothing posted in 5 days???

Too busy outside. Hard not to take advantage of the nice weather when it's around.

I'll second that, besides I usually like to listen to a football game on while working,,,
