Hey Folks,

Paul's plea prompts me to post some pictures of my latest project for your perusal.

I've been pretty quiet because my latest project is not really woodworking; I've been working on an old (1945) South Bend 9A machinist lathe.

The first thing I had to do was take it to a parts washer and have it degreased. Then, I had to build a bench for it. For that, I built a 4" MDF torsion box, faced it with plywood, trimmed it with some Doug fir, and buried some tee nuts in the top for mounting the lathe bed. I stacked the whole thing on some salvaged drawer units and a boxed base with leveler feet from Rockler. Some paint and varnish and it works, ... sort of.

I'm now waiting for a new drive belt, some tooling, and the four different lubes needed for this little beast. I'm not really sure what I'm going to use it for, but my first project will be four oil cans for the aforementioned lubes. The biggest challenge will be keeping the sawdust off of it. :-?

Hey Dennis,

Like I said above, the first project will be four Eagle 66 style oil cans, for the lubes needed for the lathe. After that, I'm open to suggestions. I never expected to get the lathe in the first place, but it was too good to pass up.

Cheers,
Tom

Looks good Tom, there are so many thing you can do in woodworking with that lathe. As for the dust just drape a sheet over it when no in use.

Hey Zulu,

I've often wondered how the trunions are turned on a turned cannon barrel?

Cheers,
Tom

Tom,
A pocket is milled in the side of the barrel and a lathe turned trunnion is heat shrunk in and welded in place if it is iron.
Brass is just heat shrunk in.

How long is your lathe? It will have to be twice the length of the barrel you are turning so you can bore it.

Tom I think they would be best done on a milling machine with a boring/facing head.

Tom, that's a wonderful looking machine. I am sure you will have lots of fun with it, and find it does stuff that you used to buy made by others.
Cheers,
Eric
