Hey Folks,

A couple of days ago, I glued up the top for the second of two staked leg tables. Unlike the first, which was made of white oak, this one is of African makore. The makore is very similar to mahogany, in color, texture, and weight.

This particular board was nine feet long and 15" wide. What is most remarkable though is the chatoyance of waterfall figure. There was some hint of it once it was rough planed. But after I cut it out and sanded it to 100 grit, I poured some mineral spirits on it and that's when the magic happened.

It just keeps getting better. :-)

Cheers,

Hey Lawrence,

Yeah, isn't it fun when that happens?

Cheers,
Tom

you're going to have a hard time selling the oak table until the makore one is gone. Nobody will notice it in the shadow of that figure!

What a stretch, Tom!! Furniture of NECESSITY??? That qualifies as a pedestal for a Princess! So Beautiful! How did you end up with such fine sock?? Sure am looking forward to the finished piece.
BTW I'm reading the book now too...I got it right after finishing a staked stool much like the sawbench he (C.S.)opens with.

Hey Don,

Believe it or not, the Makore was significantly cheaper than the White Oak. It's frequently the situation here, where I can buy an exotic from another continent cheaper than I can buy wood from my own country. It's usually better quality as well.

Cheers,
Tom

Early on i built a few pieces with makore - and it was as you showed and described - just beautiful and finished wonderfully. Then towards the middle of the last piece i started getting a harsh reaction to it - nose & sinuses closing up - hard to breathe - had to use a mask to complete the project. Then weeks after finishing it i cut a piece on the table saw just to see - and again pretty immediate bad reaction. I use a lot of different exotics and makore is the only one i have been allergic to.
