Hey Folks,

Although I'm still finishing up my latest commission, I have started on my next project, a pair of staked-leg tables from Christopher Schwarz's, Anarchist's Design Book. I'm making the first one out of white oak, and the second out of African makore.

Although Chris likes to use a bandsaw to cut his round table tops out, I prefer a router on a trammel. Here is the first top being cut out.

This first table will be finished with a Scandinavian soap finish, which will be a first for me. Wish me luck.

More later,
Tom

Hey Duan,
It's just plain white soap flakes made into a paste that's rubbed on, then buffed out, like wax. I leaves a very blonde, plain jane finish, that can be easily renewed as needed. I think that it's 'Scandinavian' because they're the only people that still routinely use it.
Cheers,
Tom

And Anarchist woodworkers.
;)

Let us know how it turns out.
Frankly, I'm skeptical about it as finish, despite its lineage.

Also I'm curious about the center point used with your trammel/sled.
Is that a pin that's clamped?
Why the clamp? Are you concerned about the trammel lifting up in operation?
I suspect at that distance from center it's a possibility best cared for.

Hey Dan,

Yes, the clamp is to keep the trammel from riding up and off the pin. It's only a problem where the router is unsupported outside the circle.

Regards the soap finish, my paternal grandmother was a homestead girl, and they had a soap finished table. I never saw it, but the idea has haunted me for some time. It's time to put it to rest once and for all.

Cheers,
Tom

Hey Folks,

Here are a few progress pics from the staked table project. The jig on the drill press sets the splay angle of the legs. Once the sub top is glued to the top, the holes are deepened with a cordless drill.

I plan to start on the makore top next, before I get around to making legs. I'll post some photos when I do.

Cheers,
Tom
