Hey Folks,

Has anyone tried this?

I have a good friend who has asked that I teach her to make these, and she's never done any lathe work, or any wood work at all for that matter. I'm thinking a vacuum bag and lots of epoxy, plus a lot of CA glue during the turning will be needed. I've also read that sanding is a bad idea as it smears the pigments in the pencils.

Any insights would be appreciated. I'm not really looking forward to a lot of messy and expensive experimentation.

Thanks,
Tom

Can't seem to find a link right quick but that looks similar to a technique I saw a while back where a bunch of branches were cast in epoxy then turned, spindle orientation into a bowl. Interesting idea. What kind of finish to use on the crayon in the pencils without softening it?? Did you turn the example you show? Nice job if so.

Use search words "turning colored" at GOOGLE for many hits and a push thru from there to U-TUBE will give many videos.

Not sure exactly how to go about it... but I would think about using a paint pot attached to a compressor / vacuum and add a slight vacuum then add pressure to remove bubbles from the epoxy. This technique is used to make snakeskin pen blanks etc.

Hope this sparks some kind of idea... but either way post your results, I'm intrigued!

Hey Guys,

Just to clarify, I didn't make this thing, and I'm looking for any tips on how to do it.

Thanks,
Tom

As it's mounted on the lathe in the first picture you show, I'm not sure quite how all the pencils were bound together. But what I'd do, following the suggestion of the branch bowl I mentioned, would be to get a cardboard tube the diameter of the piece you want to make, fill it with the pencils than cast it in the epoxy. Quite clearly like in the example, you'd want to color the epoxy with a black pigment. I've used this approach to turn pieces of bone by casting them in a paper cup which allowed purchase with a drive and live center for turning. The outstanding results in your photos will require very accurate centering.

I can see how one can assemble the pencils in a stack/form and then filling said form with epoxy. After turning could one coat it with epoxy again and then turn/polish that. Hopefully that would avoid sanding and smearing the colors. Maybe, ?

At the risk of hijacking the thread, check out this video. It's pretty related, at least in my mind. And it has full instructions - no mystery like the one posed by Tom.

Do a search on you tube. I found at least half dozen in 30 seconds. Even more on Google.
