I'm having fun learning the ins and outs of my new CNC and at my pretty wife's request made a few signs for our new trees and orchard - the wood for the tree tag signs are dunnowood from a stack in the barn (possibly maple) and the main orchard sign is cedar scavenged from an old lean to we had to take down.

I like this new machine A LOT...

Thanks for looking as always!

Is the machine a Woodcraft Shark?

Can you carve out. 1/8 letters with your machine.

Thanks for the responses all- we have 15 new fruit trees to add to the few cherry and apple we already have established on the property.

The CNC is a Rockler CNC Shark HD with a 25 x 25 cutting range. I'm working to get my shop completely set up and will be sure to post a "tour" once I'm done... "starting over" is fun, but challenging and it is taking me longer than I thought it would.

As for letter sizing, 1/8 is pretty small for a cnc... pushing the limits of what a router bit can clearly do. This range is much more in the size capabilities of a laser engraver... my next tool acquisition if things work out :)

Thanks again all-
Lawrence

Are you asking whether the machine can carve letters 1/8" high, or with a 1/8" bit?

Lawrence answered the question about 1/8" high letters. No.
But if you're asking can a CNC router cut letters with an 1/8" bit, the answer is yes. With the right feeds and speeds, you can even get down to 1/16" bits, even 1mm bits, but they are incredibly easy to break. Slow feeds, high spindle speeds, and shallow depth of cut are the keys.
Do you have something specific in mind you're trying to cut?

I was thinking of some Small
1/2 " wide x 2" long strips Of wood that read
Little bear canoes ?? I would have to re saw the wood 1/8 thick and glue it on each canoe.
Kinda like a metal trophy tag.

Laser engraver is the answer-- talk to me in 2 months (stealth inbound gloat...) it is looking like I will be getting an epilog helix soon

Little Bear,
I have these done with a laser at the local Ace Hardware store for $3 each. I provide the 1/8" thick oak.
They are 2" long X 1" tall.

LAWRENCE: Curiosity. What pray tell is the back story on the name of your orchard/ farm/homestead?
The name is too intreaging not to have an interesting story.

Another question about the signs. Did you carve the signs then fill the lettering and design with paint or stain and then plane the painted surface to make everything so crisp or do you have a verrry steady hand? :-D

Back story is easy- our home is VERY close to an active US Navy Runway... The star in this pic is our place :)

As for the fill- it is carve with v-shape router with the cnc, cover with shellac to reduce capillary action of any grain, push black paint into the lines...sloppily and quickly, then plane/sand off the top. It makes for a very clean sign.

Thanks again and I hope this explains our place's nickname "the runway house". It is loud at times... but is kindof neat too (and we'd never have been able to afford it otherwise!)

Lawrence
