Oak dining table suffers from age and grandchild art projects abuse. The finish is worn off in several places. Has several deep gouges. Also has paint, water color, and crayon residue in many places. I plan to strip it with chemical stripper, stain it with golden pecan. Then finish with poly or something similar.
1.) If the art residue places don't come off with the stripper how can I get it off.
2.) How can I fill the gouges, hopefully to match the wood so close they will be hard to see.
3.) Suggestions on what finish to use since it will be dining table subject to spills from food and drink.
I haven't started it yet so any ideas would be appreciated.

MIGHTY MITE: Give the same treatment to the leaves for the table that you use on the top. If the gouge isn't too bad you might be able to steam it flush with an iron. You might also make the gouge repair with an inlay of some sort. Another thing to consider is if your table is a manufactured one, the surface may be veneer and care will be needed in any refinishing process not to further damage the top with excess sanding or too much liquid might loosen the veneer.

Agreed- check if veneer first

if not, I would try to remove some if not all of the gouges, then sand and refinish- I also always like to put a coat of shellac on anything before refinishing because you never know what oils/silicone etc has gotten on the table over the years and will cause refinishing problems.

Hope this helps and post pics when you are done!
Lawrence

Thanks for the advise. I will check closer, but I think it is solid oak. Some of the gouges are deep. I don't think an steam and heat from an iron will work, but I will try it.
I thought about mixing some of the sawdust, glue, and stain to make a filler for the gouges. Your thoughts on this idea please.
I was thinking after sanding to stain it with golden pecan, then shellac mixed 50-50 with denatured alcohol. (Gene
showed me this mix as a sealer and it works great).
Then several coats of Minwax wipe on poly.

Thanks again, George

Of course, I will post pictures when I get it done.

Steaming will repair dents but it will do nothing for gouges. Dents are crushed fibers which sometimes can be steamed back out. Gouges are made by removing material (like with a chisel or a ... gouge). Steam will do nothing here.

I've seen this advertised as a solution many times.
IME it does not work. At least to my eye.
The sawdust is all end-grain and therefore makes the "patch" absorb stain more readily.
It leaves a uniform, dark colored spot in place.

It's just a sliver, but a patch of solid wood can be glued down into that gouge and would be more invisible to the eye.

Personally, I'd research how to clean off the art residue ... give it light sanding, and apply a good topcoat.

For me, the dings, gouges and such that my children have applied to our kitchen table are part and parcel of their lives.
I enjoy the memories.

If you have colour mismatches you can use poly and/or somthig like poly-shades and oil colours to match the existing finish
