This time they are naval carriages. They are for a customer who has a pair of 32" long barrels.
It is his intention to display them outside. Bummer! :(

They did turn out real nice!

Hey Zulu,

Beautiful work, as always.

Is there any chance that you could post a video of one of your cannons firing? I would particularly like to see one of the naval carriages in action.

Cheers,
Tom

Tom,
Go to this link on my website.
You should be able to see several guns firing.

Paul,
These things are actually simple. I see things on this site that amaze me!
Tom's creations, Little Bear's canoes, and a lot of other stuff!!!

Well, Zulu, you don't take second place to anyone with respect to your woodworking skills. But beyond that what really REALLY impresses me is your metal work.

Dennis,
I appreciate the compliments but what impresses me are those who do their work with hand tools.
I don't even own a usable hand planer. If I can't plug it in, I don't know what to do with it.

On the other hand, I had to figure out the metal work.
One of the hardest things for me was bending the half rounds for the capsquares. At one time I was paying a blacksmith $40 a pair to bend them. He would give me something that required way too much work on my end to make it serviceable.

A job came along that required seven carriages.
So I came up with this idea to bend the half rounds.

I built a hydraulic press using a 12 ton jack. I collected a bunch of different size mandrels to bend around, and put my little horse shoe forge to good use.
I have posted these pictures before.

A lot more work goes into the metal work for seven carriages.

Wow.

I'm speechless. I don't think I've ever made two things quite the same let alone a whole table's worth.

Your forge is propane fired I take it? I've always wanted some kind of forge setup although I don't do nearly enough metal working to warrant making let alone buying one. Usually I just fire up the torch and make do.

The forge also doubles as a really good heater.
On the rare occasion that it is too cold to work in my little shop, I place the forge on a piece of granite in the middle of the floor and fire it up.
It only takes about five minutes and I'm peeling off my sweatshirt!

It is propane fired.
Here is a link to forges.

I got mine about 15 years ago and I think I paid $350 for it. It is a two burner.

I've been meaning to ask for a long time now, but always resisted:
Who buys these cannons and what for? There's clearly a market, but I've never seen one in front of someone's house.

drstrip,
A lot of folks shoot them. Some are just for display. Some of the barrels are very old and valuable and some are reproductions.
Now you can never say you have not seen one in front of someone's house.
This is my house!

It must be a pretty rough neighborhood if you have 7 cannons in front of your house and you still need ADT Security.

Actually there are eight. There is one on the right side of the door hiding back there. You can see it.

Six of these were for a Pirate museum in Galveston. This is the day they were coming to pick them up.
The two on the porch are mine.
I make the barrels out of concrete.
