Hey Dennis,
Texture is your friend.
And when you need to repair, you can buy those big aerosol cans of texture to match.
Cheers,
Tom
What this involves, Tom, is trim around a single window in our upstairs closet. I had originally in a lapse of rational thinking intended to build some built-in storage around this window thus concealing the ragged edges of the drywall. That idea has since bit the dust, so to speak, so now I'm in the process of adding wood (cherry) trim around the window frame and taping 'L' metal to match the rest of the detailing in the bedroom. The biggest problem is the variation in the setback of the actual frame from the surface of the finished wall. So it involves adding the aforementioned trim of the worst (thickest) dimension then finishing the wall out to meet that trim all the way around.
Texture is out since there is none elsewhere in that space. It's a small, really small project and I probably shouldn't complain since each coat of taping mud takes about 45 minutes or less to apply and then over night to dry enough to add the next. Leaving me plenty of time to waste with my face plastered to a computer monitor relating my fascination with gypsum based wall finishes.
Spent a number of years doing tile work, reeliron, and appreciate your preference for plaster by all means. Afraid it would be overkill for this application, though.
