I am designing a jelly cupboard 42H X24W X15D. The legs (stiles) will be 1 3/4 square and the sides will have 3 small panels. What is the typical thickness for panels in panel construction. I was thinking 3/8.

This is my first panel furniture piece with side panels.

Think a little less, so you can resaw 4/4 lumber to make the panels and save some money. They're not structural, they just block dust intrusion. Remember to float them, and if you're smart, prefinish, so you won't see edges revealed when the humidity drops. You can buy these, as many do http://www.rockler.com/space-balls-rais ... or-spacers , or get some spline material to do the same job. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Phifer-0-210 ... &gclsrc=ds keep a fat one and a skinnier one on hand. Fat along the grain, thin across.

Thanks NB! I was struggling with the 3/8 for the reason of not being able to resaw and wasting lumber. I'll look into the spacers too, I've made some panel doors where I should have used them.
