Finally got a round toit and took down this red maple that was leaning towards my shop. A friend lent his time and back hoe to make sure it fell where I wanted it to sort of. Has a squirrely bend in the trunk as you can see in the pic. Don't know what I'll do with it since I don't have a use for it. Give it away to somebody for fire wood or something probably. It's about 20" dia at the cut.

Hey Gene,

Absent any other plan, I would cut it into 20' lengths, then split the pieces in half and coat all the exposed wood with lagging. They could be valuable to bowl turners. Take a look at what they're getting for half round turning pieces on eBay, it may surprise you.

Cheers,
Tom

You mean 20" lengths, I assume  . George has already been over to look at it so he might get some. I might keep some for small stuff - cutting boards, etc.

There might be a nice crotch piece for turning that would look ok, but most of the red maple around here is pretty blah. I'll be cutting it up over the next few days, so we'll see.

Gene,

At the least, cut some 2" X 20" pieces. Never hurts to have some free lumber around even if it is "blah" There was an old apple tree in my parents yard when I cut it down the base has some real nice color and grain and I cut it into some small boards. Gonna make some small boxes for my brothers and I.

George (Mighty Mite) came over to help me cut this tree up into manageable pieces, and also got first pick. Some of the tree has very dark heart wood, almost like walnut. Never seen that dark in other red maple. Got a lot yet to do, but it looks like it will make some pretty turnings.

He's also doing some steam bending for me on that antique bed project.
