I do a lot of bent wood laminations. It always involves a struggle with clamps, usually whaling on them with a 12" crescent wrench, which is not how they're made to be used. I finally got disgusted (or maybe smart) and bought a 20 ton shop press from Harbor Freight. They're probably thinking machine shop, but hey - it works. Much easier than half a dozen clamps, one handed operation keeps the other hand free to keep things aligned. Also, the force is in the right direction, so the form surfaces stay parallel. $154 if you find the coupon.

The glueup in the form is a 36" diameter (2" depth over 17" chord). 8 layers of 3/16" cherry, for a total 1.5".

Sweet!

Now you need to make sure you don't press all of the glue out!

Nice setup! I've got a couple bottle jacks lying about and have often thought of fab'ing up something like this. Thanks for the photo.

Now you can also conduct your own joint testing.
M&T vs dovetail vs loose tenon ...

I don't think I could buy the steel for what I paid for the whole thing. Unless you've got the channel and such lying around, it's hardly worth the effort to build yourself.

Down pressure will do it. That's a good price for the whole rig.

I'd be embarrassed to admit how much misc. CRUD I've got lying around.
