Hey Guys,

What's your procrastination project? By that I mean, what do you work on, when you know you should be working on something else? I go to the shop, and I just can't bring myself to work on a carpentry project that's needed, or to finish a project that I've stalled on. So what do I work on? Spoons!

A recent wind storm left a bonus of windfalls, and since spoon carving is best done with green wood, that's my excuse. I gotta use it while it's still green, right?

The thing I love about carving spoons is that they don't have to come out any specific way. In fact, they sort of evolve to their final shape on their own. No two are alike, and that's great! There's no pressure for any kind of precise replication, I just keep carving until I'm satisfied. Usually, I like to set it aside for a day and then come back to it, a new perspective shows where to start in again.

I can waste a lot of time on spoons. :D

Here's how they start, you have to rive the pith out.

I use a wax marker to draw, and re draw, the general outline (somehow, they still end up asymmetrical  :-D )

I like to use a shave horse, but this one is made for paddles, oars, longbows and spars. I'll have to modify it for spoons and short stuff, ...someday.

Even though no two are exactly alike, I find it difficult to make them very much different. They just sort of become some part of me, then they are done.

What's your procrastination project?
Cheers,
Tom

Those are some really NICE spoons. I may just have a NEW procrastination project now!!
I guess I've always gravitated to making boxes & keepers for my tools.....to avoid picking up a tedious project that I've lain down.

I'll confess to chucking a piece of wood in the lathe just to make some shavings. I've got probably half a dozen half turned boxes and/or bowls ly9ing around begging to be finished as a result of finding another avenue for my procrastination.

Probably my worst affliction is actually looking for some new project to avoid doing the ones I should be finishing.

Now you've got me (re) interested in turning a few more scoops on the lathe.

Oh, but I need to finish the fence gate.

Wait, I promised that candelabra for a friends daughter's recent graduation.

But ....

But ....

Oh-well, time for coffee.

Seems like my shop always needs sweeping, tools need to be arranged more conveniently, the wood pile needs to be better organized, offcuts need to be moved to the stove pile. I guess I don't need a project to procrastiante.

Making small stuff for the shop, or shed. Target frames or shooting stuff. Or sometimes I'll just set up a target block in the back yard and send a few arrows into it.

Today I started laying out a holder for my squares, or some of them anyway.

Procrastination!!!!!! There is a word for it???????? That's awesome. I finaly know what I have been doing all these years. Thanks, I have projects going on in the house that I have PROCRASTINATED about, after starting said job, for about 10 years but since I have RETIRED, did I tell you I have RETIRED?? I have been given a ultimatum. Make progress and make it soon. Hence the drawers I am building and the doors I will be building. And all the sanding and painting and molding etc, etc. I am exhausted just thinking about. Happy wife happy life. so true.

^This.
My shop is too small to start another project.
When I can't get the motivation to work on the project, I'll end up putting away tools, cleaning, etc.

I really need to manage scrap better.

I was going to join the "National Procrastination Society" but, decided to put it off another day or two.
