…a bit, since 1937, when this photo was taken of what would become Fremont Occasional Woodworks. The building by then, was already 24 years old. It was built in 1913 as a theater, well outside of Seattle, on the wrong side of town, on the only road out of town going north. It was charitably called a “Vaudeville” theater, but given its location at that time, I think it was something a bit bawdier. Since then, it has been a garage more than once, a laundry or dry cleaner outlet, a white water rafting rental shop, and now a wood shop.

Here’s a recent Google Street View photo.

I’m working on still more changes for the future. Stop by and see what’s new.

Cheers,
Tom

Tom,
This is the coolest ever! Do you own the building or lease it?

Hey Zulu,

It's our retirement fund. So I own it until Kris says we need to sell it. ;-)

Cheers,
Tom

Hey Glen,

Inside pics are coming. I'm working on a display window platform for the front room.
For the past seven years the front room has been like a den for me. Transitioning to a showroom is proving to be a bigger challenge than I thought.

Cheers,
Tom

TMS: Why transition from a den/man cave to a show room? Most of the furniture retailers I am familiar with want their displays to look lived in. You can put the personal stuff under cover and leave the books etc in the open. Pull down the shades or set the screens in place turn the lights down and you're back to familiar comfort :-D

Hey Newtooth,

I guess that would work if I didn't generally prefer to wallow in a squalor of old magazines, and miscellaneous jigs, patterns, unfinished projects, and drafting supplies. There's no room to display the goods!

I'll get there eventually. This week though, I'm shifting the firewood to the shed before the monsoon comes. Tomorrow is an 80% chance of rain. :-?

Cheers,
Tom

Hey Paul,
No, it's the same size. The difference in the photos is just perspective.
Cheers,
Tom

Did you get your firewood moved, Tom? We're currently fulfilling the Washington Weather Promise. LeafGuard gutters need cleaning. Yes, they do clog up. Yes, they clean them for free. No, this doesn't further the topic of the thread. Yes, I'd like to see a display showroom in the front of your shop. Back on topic!

How many photos do you have of the original or older life times of the building? Would be a kick to have them displayed in the 'front room'.

Hey Dennis,

Yeah, the monsoon has arrived here too. And no, I didn't get it all shifted. But I did put a tarp over it. I think that I have enough sheltered for an average winter though.

That is the only old picture I have of the shop. It's from an old Works Progess Aministration (WPA) make-work project during the Great Depression. The WPA set out to document every building in the country.

I'm working on a display window dias for the north picture window. When it's nearly done, I'll post some picures and a new blog entry.

Cheers,
Tom

I lived in a store front in San Francisco. for over 3 Years. I loved the place. tall ceilings. 3 sides front window. tiled shelf's at same.. I learned it was a candy store in its history.
The only down fall outside my window was a Gas station. the next block had a mom and pop grocery store. next butcher shop, next hair salon, next do it yourself laundry, next tropical fish store. I was 15 blocks from the pacific ocean two miles from the cliff house it was GREAT!

PS I am 1/4 mile from the same ocean. just of the other side of it :D

As I mentioned before Im getting close to going out to.

I have a few ideas of what Id like to do.

I was considering doing what you did buying a shop close to the house.

I got somethings I want to build that I think will sell and some other things to keep busy and make a few bucks.

To avoid moving the shop every year or so. Buying might be the way to go. if i can get a decent price for it.
