I got the finish done on the bed step I made for my wife. It's almost too tall, but the first step works well for her now. May need the top step for other things like reaching the top shelf in her closet. It's made of Red Cedar with a pair of red oak stretchers under the step treads. I used cherry Miller Dowels instead of screws to hold it together. This was the first time I used the larger dowels and found that you REALLY have to make certain to get ALL of the shavings out of the hole before inserting the glued dowel. This was a RPITA and I ended up cutting about 3/4" off the small end of the dowels to get them to fit at all.

Glue up.

After finish.

Man!
Whatever finish that is really pops the grain in the cedar!

*snicker*
;)

It amazes me to this day how an almost imperceptible flake of dust can keep a joint from closing properly.

I agree with the comment on what a nice finish you have. Cedar is just beautiful wood to use not to mention the aroma as you are working it. :-D
Not sure what you used but, I used BLO first and then Helmsman spar urethane on my glider. But, I'm sure yours will hold up better as my glider is outdoors and the weather really tore it up. Being that your project is indoors, it should hold up nicely for a long time. I sure hope so anyway.
Good job.

Hey Rog,

Let's examine the evidence, shall we?
On his finishing table is a can of Sam Maloof's rocking chair finish, ... and an aerosol can.
You can easily guess where my money is bet.

Cheers,
Tom

Great deduction there Tom. Yep, I used about 5 coats of Maloof's Oil/Poly finish and toped off with about 3 coats of Minwax Poly spray. I don't normally go for the spray stuff, but it was handy and I was out of the wipe on poly. The spray does dry quick and allows me to get on 3 coats in a day. Then some sanding and polishing and wax to finish.

Thanks for all the comments guys, and Rodger, that is a beautiful glider. Outstanding work there.

Frank, that is stunning. I love using cedar, and gloss poly really sets it off. I made a cedar chest for me about 25 years ago, out of timbers on my property that were downed and aged. The gloss poly still looks great and sits at the end of my bed. I didn't eliminate the knots or rotted out places, only minimized them so they would add character to the piece. I showed a picture one lady, and she offered me $500 for it just from the picture. Told her no, it was made from logs on my land and it would never be for sale.

Another chest I made a few years ago for a friend, commisioned by his wife for an USAF retirement gift. On this one I used some walnt accents.

Beautiful Yank. How did you do the strips? I'd like to do something similar on a project I have coming up.

Very Nice. I really like the finish. It makes the grain pop.

Sorry for the late response Ice Pirate. the stripes were done with laser engraver, by a local trophy shop.
