Looks interesting. Guess you're going to dye/stain it to match. I've got some cherry in that size, which might be easier to match the color. I'll sell it to you cheap, but the shipping from Maryland might be a little salty.

Good luck.

If I were paying to restore an antique headboard that cost me $15K, I'd expect the replacement piece to match the species of the original, even if it meant waiting for the restorer to track down the wood. I might even want not merely mahogany, but the same country of origin if possible. For bonus credit it would be nice if the lumber was sourced from another antique that was beyond hope.

But I don't like antiques, don't buy antiques, and don't restore antiques, so your mileage may vary.

If you decide to go with mahogany I just saw an ad in our local penny saver for a guy who has kiln-dried mahogany up to 4" thick. Let me know if you want me get any prices.

PM sent.

For general interest,

Found out a little more about the bed today. It's 100 years older than we thought - Late 1600's. It will be one of the lots at a nationally televised antique auction at the Opryland Hotel and Resort in Nashville on 21 Nov. So there is a deadline on this in order to get it to Nashville in time for the auction.

No pressure there!

GENE: WOW!! the doors and detail are extraordinary. I think that "est vita victory" translates to " the life of victory", "omnia vincit amor" I think is "love conquers all", "non oviescit evn do", is beyond me.

On the decorative restoration chore, did you apply the gold leaf or did the restorer do it? Did you carve the details in wood? Would the task have been easier if you cast them and placed the detail?

OUTSTANDING work and justified results for effort and attention to detail !
