This is a project in progress right now. I'm building a workstation for my Rikon Mini lathe. For years I've just had my lathe sitting on top of a Skill Clamp Table but it's never been bolted down, and yes, it tends to slide around a little. Well, being unwillingly somewhat retired and having the time on my hands and a shop full of cut offs from other projects, I've started on this.

It'll have a fixed cleat under the main work surface that the Skill Clamp Table will clamp to that should lock it in nice and tight. The lathe will be bolted to the main work surface. I'll have a series of 10 tubes on the sides to slide my chisels into and the peg board for hanging all of the pieces of my Nova chuck, and other misc. tools for turning. Hopefully this will help me cut down on my clutter, and allow me to find stuff when I need it.

Note, I couldn't find a Rikon model for Google Sketchup, so I down loaded the Jet and then stretched the bed to match.

Next project will be an actual sharpening station.

Nice work station, IP. Bet you'll run out of room for tools before long! (grin)

Move the lathe forward. That way you won't have to lean into a table. If you turn green, you'll want a cover for the pegboard so it doesn't get wet and swell.

Lot of unused space underneath which would benefit from the addition of some drawers.

Nice, but definitely not enough places for the tools. Those things seem to multiply. I have about 30 and rarely use more than 3 or 4 of them.

Thanks for the comments guys. The space under is for the stand it'll be setting on, which has a shelf under it. Drawers would be great, but they would have to be a separate unit and designed to either set on the shelf or hang from the underside of the clamp table top. If I ever needed the clamp table for anything else, it would be a pain to move.

I may need some kind of shield if I do turn anything green, though it's not been a problem yet. I see what you mean about it setting too far back, it's about 4" off the front edge, and I'll try it again before actually drilling the holes.

The 10 tubes will be for holding just the ones I work with most, and the others will be moved into drawers under my sharpener. I didn't draw this, as I'm not fully sure where it will be, but I'm also planning a large hole in the peg board to snake in the hose for the DC, and I'll also have to have a support structure for it. I'll be sure to post pics when it's done.

The best thing though, is that I'll have a place for everything I need when turning, even sand paper rolls, finishes and various parts. Organization has to start somewhere.

Well I've got it nearly completed.
Image

As you'll note, I scraped the idea of the angled tubes. The problem is that the handles of the chisels would stick out so far that it would make the area unusable. I still have the tubes and may use them elsewhere. In the meantime, I've just drilled some holes in the surface that allows me to just drop the chisels in, in a place where they are not in the way, but still accessible when I need them.

The best part is the pegboard though. I absolutely love this stuff. The white facing reflects more light, I have a way to organize all the bits and pieces of my Nova Chuck, and Cole Chuck. The drill head and various other pieces of kit. I also set up a shelf to hold finishing goods like the Micro Mesh pads, sanding strips and cord, finish, wax and other stuff.

And stowing a few of my lesser used chisels.

Still to come, a cross bar across and above the pegboard that I'll add some task lighting to, and a method of draping my DC hose over the pegboard. I'm thinking about a way of securing it in place so that it will be supported and positioned right by the work on the lathe.
