Well, I guess I did do a bit of woodworking this week. :o
Can't say that I'm real proud of it but, it does have a bit of a story to go with it.
Our granddaughter Maddy is 15 and has a guest this month from Ireland. It is part of the Ulster program between Hutchinson, Kansas and Portadown, Ireland.
Helen is here along with 29 other Irish kids between 14 and 16 that are hosted by families with kids of the same age and faith in Hutch. The project is an effort to mix protestant and catholic kids together to find a bit of understanding of each other to take home and maybe quell some of the problems in Ireland.
This has been going on for eight or nine years or so and must be doing some good or they wouldn't continue doing it.
Anyway, now that I have a "New granddaughter" for July, I thought she might like a keepsake box as a souvenir of her time in HOT Kansas so I made a quickie small box for her to take back.
I spared no expense on the wood......"Old growth plywood" was the choice..... and time......Spent, almost a day and a half building it and two days waiting for the finish to dry.

The plan is to fill it with some candy from "Goodoldwhatshername" to munch on while she's on the airplane going home.

It is not very large because I figured that Helen wouldn't have much room for too many souvenir's going back to Ireland.

Yea, that is my sense of humor showing through but, it isn't really a joke, that is old plywood.
I've had a good sized piece of plywood around the house from I guess 1975 or so and it is some of the best plywood you can imagine.
It is a FULL 3/4" thick, it has only five ply's and NO voids! It is what they used to build houses with and could be bought at any lumberyard anywhere in the day.
No pretty grain on the outside but, can be sanded smooth on both surfaces with out worrying about sanding through the top layer. Much different than anything you can buy today. Even Baltic Birch that is used so much today because of the "no void" aspect has the surface layers so thin that a sander will go right through it in a heartbeat and I'm not sure that the 13 layers makes it THAT much more stable.
I've been cutting small pieces off of my stash for several years now and will soon be out of luck. I've made several projects out of my "Old Growth" plywood in the past.

Very interesting and creative stuff you got there. Keep up the good work. I know what you mean about vintage plywood, ran across some of it at my Dad's and Father in Law's houses.................not like what you see today for sure.

I've even had some Baltic Birch plywood that contained a couple voids.

Well, Grandma gave the box with a cross necklace in it to Helen on Friday and she mentioned that Papa had made the box.
Helen gave me a look of disbelief and ask if I had really made the box. I said yes, how do you think you name got in the lid? Then I got the best payment a 71year old man could ask for....A big hug from beautiful teenage girl.
We are all happy now but, Monday will be full of tears as Helen leaves to go back to Ireland.
Our daughter and family are already planning a trip to Ireland next year to visit Helen and her family.
