Anyone have ideas on where to find 60" x 100' x 6 mil rolls of a plastic film similar to that used in heat-seal food bags? I'm playing with some ideas for vacuum clamping, but can't find a source for larger material.

I did find one supplier that has something close, but a minimum order of 3000 POUNDS of material, supplied in minimum 1000' rolls (which works out to 150 pounds each).
Thanks

Hey drstrip,

Are you sure that you want food grade plastic? It will add about 4x the cost. I have bought rolls of heat seal poly tubing in various sizes from Unline Inc.

Cheers,
Tom

I'm more interested in the properties of the film, not that it's food grade. Most food bags are either laminates or co-extruded nylon-poly films, which gives them increased tear resistance. In addition, the food bags I have at home are embossed on one face creating air channels to bleed the air when vacuum packing.

I did find a producer of films; only problem is that he has a 3000 pound minimum and spools the product in 1000' rolls which weigh in at about 150 pounds. Not very handy. On the plus side, his price is 30-50% cheaper than the uline bags.

You must be bagging a LOT of stuff to be buying 1000' rolls :-)

I got some really heavy, I mean HEAVY 30mil vinyl from a shop that does auto interiors. They it's the kind of stuff used for convertible windows (the old kind) and boat windows. If you catch them at the right time you can buy the roll ends at a discount since a lot of times it has wrinkles from the tube its rolled on and is unusable by the shop. It's practically impossible to tear a hole in the stuff.

For air bleeding I use some fiberglas window screening over the work which seems to work pretty well.

I've already got bags made from 30 mil vinyl, made using the instructions from JoeWoodworker. Nearly impossible to seal them tight. And my experience (and that of a lot of people I know) it that's it's easier to puncture them than in your experience. And of course ,they're heavy when they get large. Seal-a-meal bags hold their seal for months or longer. My thought is use plastic like that and heat weld all the seams, perhaps even weld it shut with the workpiece. Might only get a half-dozen uses from one, but that's OK for me, esp if it seals better.

And if anyone still wants 30 mil vinyl - I get it at the local Hancocks sewing store. It's not very expensive, and Hancocks mails us a 40% off one item coupon about once a week.
