Hey Folks,

The goldfinches (our state bird) usually show up on their annual migration sometime in May. But I caught this one tonight while I was cooking dinner.
Sorry for the poor picture quality, but I didn't want spook him by trying to get closer.

Cheers,
Tom

We haven't seen any up here, yet. But they're a real treat when we do.

Juncos just arrived last week. Redpolls a week before that. Imagine the goldfinches will follow in about 2 weeks. Chickadees and others we have all year round.

We put out suet this year after the bears went to their dens, and I've been enjoying the show all winter. Soon it has to come down or the bears will take it down.

EDIT 1020 am

Figures, I look out the window while filling my coffee cup and there are two goldfinches at the feeder. Oops, make that three.

Hey George,

That's interesting that your junkos are just arriving, we have them year round. My grandmother use to call them, "rainbirds".
Living in the city, I don't need to worry about bears, but crows are an annoyance at the suet feeders.

Cheers,
Tom

We get the gold finches on our sun flowers in August. Never really fed them seeds here, the squirrels are out of control!

Tom, when I was in Arizona over the winter, I was amazed that goldfinches were drinking from my hummingbird feeder. I've never seen that before. My sister looked it up and all along the Pacific Coast, birdwatchers were reporting that goldfinches were drinking the nectar from hummingbird feeders. I guess they needed some sweetness for their migration

Saw him from the kitchen window while cleaning up the girls' mess, but of course, by the time I got the camera ready, he was gone. Sat for about ten minutes, and he came into the bushes. Pressed the button and - Charge Your Battery Pack - came up. Back into the house, put in a new battery, noticed out the window that he was gone. Went out, and within five minutes, he came in to watch the Siskens and Juncos. So here he is, first of 2015.

So surprised to see 2 babies already this year -- a finch and a Stellar jay. Seems very early, eh?
