My wife and I have been talking about how much fun it would be to have a camper and travel a bit.
We talked about it for years.
Well, we finally made the plunge.
We started with a 2015 Chevrolet 2500, 4X4, crew cab, long bed.
Then found a real nice 2008 Northstar truck camper.

I just received the camper tie down hardware I need to secure the camper to the truck. If it willl stop raining here, I will install it to the truck frame.

I already had the electrical plug in for the camper installed in the bed wall.

The big truck is over 22' long. It will handle the camper and pull our bass boat with no problem.
We are avid fisher people. We have had our boat now for 7 years and have logged 150 launchings.
We are really looking forward to our first trip as soon as I finish the camper tie down process.

Ain't retirement grand?? :D

Save a spot for us Verna.

I'm impressed! Lots of great accessories are packed in your new camper. Good luck on your travels.

I'm just enjoying myself traveling towards the warnth of the Southwest. It's taking longer to get there than expected, but I'm enjoying where I'm traveling as I wait for the unusual cold to leave.

Don,
The first trip will probably be just a couple of days. I need to feel this thing out.
Between the truck, the camper and the boat, I will weigh 13,500 lbs. I'll be 45' long!!!

There is a lake we like to go to that is 110 miles away and has a real nice campground. That would be a good first trip.

We want to go to Big Bend Park in West Texas. That's about 12 - 14 hours from here.

We also have been talking about Alaska for years. That's about an 8000 mile round trip.
Even if we took 8 weeks to do it, we still would have to drive a thousand miles a week and I'm thinking that defeats the purpose of a leisurely trip. We will have to think on that one. Plus, I would want to take our canoe and I have to figure out how to haul it. It won't go on top of the camper so I think I would have to buy an old boat trailer and modify it to haul the canoe, extra water, some gas, a gang box to hold stuff and maybe even weld my generator to the bed.

I'm still thinking on that one.

I got my camper tie downs installed to the frame of the truck, mounted the camper and hooked up the boat for a test drive.
Front of the bumper to the prop of the outboard is 47' long.
I have an issue with the boat trailer lights that I have to resolve. I admit, it's not my strong point. :(

The trailer light leads are not long enough to plug into the socket in the truck bumper. I have to get some kind of extension.
I'll figure it out.

The truck pulled everything easily. :-D

Whatta dream maker you have! As for Alaska.....makes more sense to fly there and rent an RV then fly back. Cost of driving would pay for an RV (and a canoe) easily. But for going fishing from Florida to New Mexico.....you've got the ideal setup. Like Verna....take some time....stop at the best fishing holes for a while and come home only when you HAVE to.
Thanks for letting us dream with you!!
good luck!!

Don

Verna, What are you towing the camper with? Also, what is the tower looking thing you have, set up there? Enjoy your travels, you are doing what I had planned on doing one day and with the same type camper, but things just didn't work out.

Yank, I'm towing with a 2015 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4 V6. color is Barcelona Red . It doesn't even feel the approximate 1,500 lbs behind it. The "tower" is my privy tent for my Travel Toilet and my battery operated shower. Works wonderfully. If you fold ithe privy tent correctly, you get a circle about 24" across and about 1.5" thick.

I actually had envisioned a lot of woodworking during my retirement, but I've discovered traveling. I also figured if I'm retired, I can find warm weather in the winter and I don't have to deal with the cold and snow.

I have a 100 AH AGM battery and an 80 watt solar panel so I don't even need to pay for an electric campsite. It powers my 50 qt ARB Fridge/freezer, charging my iPhone, TV/DVD, recharging laptop, even a satellite dish (you don't expect me to miss IU basketball??). This is fun!

Hey Verna,

This year is a pig roast year. Is there any chance that you will be able to make it up here to the Pacific Northwest? I'm hoping to retire myself this year and the pig roast would be a great retirement party.

Let me know your availability and we can try to accommodate you on the date.

Cheers,
Tom

Congrats on your upcoming retirement, Tom. ;-)

I'll be heading home around the first of April, which will make it around 100 nights of camping. I don't think you want to move the pig roast up that far, and I remember how cold it was in May on the West Coast. I think I'll enjoy the pictures this year!

Thanks for the invite, but I think I'll be ready to see to Great Nephews by the time April comes around!
