I've yet to even fire a round, I just sit here admiring it.

Winchester 94. Serial #4597402. Got the original box and factory 'documentation'. It doesn't look like this baby has ever been fired.

Looks pretty--about my size. Dumb question....what caliber of ammo does it take?

30-30, Verna.

I've been shopping for ammo but I don't imagine I'll be doing a lot of shooting with it. I need to get Gene to help me source someplace with rounds at less than a dollar apiece!

That's a hard caliber to find these days. Midway has a couple different bullet wts in stock, but by the time you pay shipping it will be over $1/shot most times. I checked a few for you.

Underwood: http://www.underwoodammo.com/30-30winch ... xof20.aspx Has some flex tip in stock. Small outfit, but excellent ammo. Bought from them and Georgia Arms.

Midway: Several brands, etc. Some of the cheap stuff I've never heard of. Buy at your own risk. http://www.midwayusa.com/find?sortby=1& ... onid=15902

Georgia: Out of stock and pricey, but they make top quality ammo. http://georgia-arms.mybigcommerce.com/30-30-win-1/

Natchez is another you might watch. Out of stock at the moment but good prices: http://www.natchezss.com/ammo.cfm?conte ... category=3

Don't forget Walmart. Sometimes you'll get lucky. :)

A lot of people have gotten into reloading in the last few years because of prices and availability.

Great Score!!!!!!!!!!!! I used to have a Winchester Trapper model also in 30-30. I would love to have another in .45LC

Have you checked out Cheaper Than Dirt? Never mind, I just checked them and 30-30 is really pricy these days. Do you re-load? You might consider getting a press and set of dies for that puppy.

CTD ain't. Underwood has some flex tip: http://www.underwoodammo.com/30-30winch ... xof20.aspx . Expensive tho.

OK, Gene, Frank, I'm only an occasional shooter. I've had no experience with anything bigger than .22 long rifle when it comes to rifles. So, no, I don't plan on doing any reloading although a neighbor does reload so perhaps we might make a deal on supplies.

Beyond that, again, I have no familiarity with mfr's to know the value and, if it's an issue, reliability of their ammunition. So I wonder if you or anyone else has an opinion of these offerings -

The only ones I don't know anything about are the Prvi Partizan, Ultra-Max, and Ten-X.

The others are all well known brands. Buffalo bore specializes in hi-power ammo, as you can see from the advertised ballistics (and the price), and will have noticeably harsher recoil. That extra power could cause some issues with the rifle if you shoot a lot of it or it's an older gun. I'd suggest using something milder, such as the Federal, or Hornady. Remington has a reputation of being somewhat dirty - leaves a lot of powder residue in the bore and action.

Barnes is a lead free bullet (solid copper). Some folks like it, some don't. Made primarily for environmentalists in CA.

Wolf makes a lot of very popular match ammo for competition shooters.

Winchester has been making ammo for a very long time and know what they're doing, likewise Federal who supplies a great deal of ammo to the military.

Now, here's what you need to decide: What will be your expected range, and what game will you be hunting? You need to know that in order to pick an appropriate cartridge and bullet combination based on internal, external and terminal ballistics. Almost an infinite number of choices there. Your rifle may like a certain brand, bullet configuration, muzzle velocity, etc. better than others. Scoop up as much info as you can about each brand, etc. you are considering and narrow the field down as much as you can, say the top 3. Then buy a box of each and try them out.

Here's some video's you should watch before you plunk down your money. Rex is primarily focused on extreme long range shooting (which you won't be), but much of his advice pertains to any rifle. Start with the first episode and work your way thru. You can skip most of them, but should watch any that pertain to cartridge selection and ballistics. Most are about 30min long, but pretty easy to watch. Take a few notes, some of the vids get pretty technical. :) http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... vDCIcEPxUn

A word on reloading. Most reloaders only reload for their weapons for a couple of good reasons. One is a liability issue, for them if a reload blows up your gun, the other is that they typically tweak their rounds for a specific purpose and gun. Your friend may or may not consent to reload some for you, but I'd bet he wouldn't.

PS: Many mfgs now have simple on-line ballistics calculators that will display the typical trajectory of various cartidge/bullet combinations based on your selections. These will vary some depending on your rifle, etc. Here's one from Winchester.

Also, checkout http://www.gunbot.net for a listing of dealers, their current stock, and prices. Click on Rifle ammo and then the caliber of your choice. You can even set a "goal" price and it will highlight any dealers that hit your desired price point. Don't forget about shipping charges when figuring the price of buying ammo online.

Dennis, when you get some ammo try this out. 13yo w/Lever gun vs. full auto MAC10. :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5PLnlRVqKQ

And Jim Finch shows how to do it:

I tried out Jim's tips yesterday with my 9422m. He's using a competition gun, so I didn't expect to even get close to his speed. But I did have a problem with my gun. I put a hammer extension on it a while back, and after 4 or 5 rounds it slipped out of position and interfered with the bolt carrier, which didn't allow a full stroke on the lever therefore no ejection of the spent round. Thought it may just have not been tightened enough so retightened and tried it again. Same result. So this extension is going into my never use it again drawer. I could probably file it down some to prevent the problem, but why bother?

This is the extension. $10 lesson in what not to do.

Hey Gene,

In my experience, a hammer extension is used to make it easier to access the hammer when a scope is mounted over it. I had a Thompson Center Contender in 7mm TCU with a 5X Lupold. I absolutely needed an extension to cock the hammer, unless you had a 5 year old's fingers.

Cheers,
Tom
