Hey Folks,
Here are some pics of the shop door that I've been working on for some time. For a long time, I've wanted to replace the cheap hollow core door that separates my workshop from the front room of the shop. A dutch door allows me to be sociable while keeping kids, dogs, and the generally unaware in the front room.

The door is solid quarter sawn white oak and is very heavy; so heavy that I had to rebuild the frame with the same oak in order to properly support it. The window is wired glass, laminated with heavy plastic film on both sides. The finish is just Zinser's SealCoat and walnut colored wax for a "dirty oak" look.

I'm still in the process of glazing the window, and of course I need to repair the trim.

Tom

Thats super Tom. I have a question though, the stile widths are different top and bottom. Is that a Dutch door thing?

Youve raised the bar again that is for sure!

Hey Eric,

Good eye!
Actually from the front of the door, they are the same. On the backside, they are narrowed by the 1/2" rabbet cut for the window (I was too lazy to make stopped rabbets). I still have to put the glazing strips in on the backside. I hope to get that done today.

Tom

Very nice job!

I've always thought dutch doors are interesting... too bad they're not hardly used these days.

A masterpiece, Tom!!! It looks like an antique Dutch door that I remember from the elementary school I attended. I can't tell you which room it went to, but your door reminded me of it.

Love the quarter sawn oak--perfect wood.

I actually have never seen the piece that holds the top and bottom together (except for in your Puzzler). I just remember a throw bolt holding this door together.

Nice job, Tom. I'll bet it does weigh a bit being solid oak.

The hardware puzzler makes so much sense now seeing it in place and in use. Of all the dutch doors I've come in contact with (not that many by all means) I've never seen a latch like that. Most have been simple screen door latch kinda things.

Thanks Folks,

You're all too kind. There are an embarrassing number of stupid, inattentive, and amateurish mistakes, that I won't point out. Unfortunately, I violated one of my own rules and didn't make a mock up out of cheap lumber first. I've never regretted making a mock up, but I've often regretted not making one.

Verna,
Thanks, the old schoolhouse look was exactly what I was working toward; dirty oak, wired glass etc. The door to my old swim coach's office was the model in my head.

I got the glazing strips done today, and so now it's just a matter of neatening up the drywall and trim damage, and cleaning up my mess.

Tom

A beautious door Tom, why the stopped champhers around the glass??
Just a curiosity. I would have done it continuous, although I can't say why I would do that.

Good lookin' door Tom. :-D I wanted a Dutch door going out to our sun room when we built this place, but Gail vetoed the idea.

Hey Paul,
Just an aesthetic choice; part of the old school ornamentation I was trying to achieve.

Wonderful work. And with wired glass and saftey film on both sides it must be even child proof.

Hey Folks,

I finally got the trim on, makes it look a bit more finished.

Cheers,

Tom,
It really adds a touch of class to your shop.
It seems like anything like that in my shop would get beat to heck and back.

Very nice door.
By the way, I think your pet trout needs a drink of water. He's not looking too good.

Hey Rog,

He escaped from under the door before I could get the threshold down.
