I tried to send a PM, but it's not appearing in my sentbox. I tried emailing via the member list, but get an error screen. Do either of these work anymore? Is there a trick to making it happen?

It won't show up in your Sent Box until the recipient opens it. It'll stay in your Outbox till then.

Drstrip:

Ignore this error message when you get it:

"Ran into problems sending Mail. Response: 535 Incorrect authentication data

DEBUG MODE

Line : 144
File : smtp.php
"

No, I don't have an explanation of the error message. I just sent you an e-mail, and yes, I did get the above error message.

thanks for the info on the outbox vs. sentbox.

Verna -
Never got your email, so maybe the error msg has value.

Bill, Dennis -
So you got the PM, but did you get an email alerting you that someone had sent you a PM? Otherwise if you don't look at the inbox, you'll never know you have messages waiting.

As to the error msg in emails and other places - my theory is that it is a configuration error in the .php files for the forum. I've used phpBB, the same software used here, and one of the configuration fields is the address of the mail server for outgoing mail, as well as the account name and password for accessing that server. My theory is that somewhere along the way the account this forum points to became invalid. Someone with sufficient admin rights needs to do this -

Go to the admin panel,
In the "General" tab, on the left panel most of the way down click Email settings.
In the email page near the bottom you have to provide email authentication info - the name of the SMTP server, the user name, the user password, whether to use ssl, etc. I suspect some of this authentication information is invalid (perhaps the email account it points to no longer exists), so an error is being generated. Not sure why it's presented to the user as opposed to sending it to admin is another issue.

Just sent a PM yesterday and got a response back from the member I sent it to. I didn't get an e-mail alerting me that I had a message, but I did get a pop-up box when I went to WWA site.

I guess the moral of the story is you have to check in at the WWA site every day. Sounds like an insidious plan by Mango and the other mods to get our numbers back up. BSEG

At the top of the 'page' under the heading WWA Info Exchange on the second line of the small print it says "You have no new messages" until you get a message then it says you have one. Or two. Or three - whatever. Also when I first open the forum page there's a little window that pops up alerting me of a new message or messages (PM's). No, I don't get an email notice of messages.
