What the heck this is about trees after all.

In the Scrap Pile thread about chocolate, I had to promise not to pose a puzzler about Mayan pyramids. So here's a little quiz for you:

What is unique about the fruit of the cacao tree (which cocoa comes from)?

No fair using the internet. :-?

It's tart (sour) tasting and used like chewing tobacco by the local people.

Hey Rog,

Could be, but not what I was looking for. It's something that makes the tree unique.

Well, I already made my guess so I won't make another . Curiousity got the better of me tho, so I read up about it but still couldn't find anything in particular that would make it any more unique than several other species, with one possible exception, which I won't mention. It is an interesting species tho, and thanks for the motivation. :)

Hey Folks,

Is it something I said? Where is everyone?

I'm afraid that the Puzzler has been dormant for so long, that know one bothers to check it anymore.

I miss Ralph.

If I get a few more attempts at this one, I may be motivated to come up with another.

Could it be that the seed is on the outside as it is with strawberries, a fruit?

Just an USWAG

Hey Dennis,

You are close, in that the tree is a botanical oddity. C'mon folks, someone surely knows the answer to this without having to google it.

The seed pods grow on the trunk of the tree rather than on the limbs?

Bingo!

We have a winner! Gee, that didn't take long did it?

I was beginning to wonder if anyone ever looked a the puzzler anymore. the points were starting to get a bit dried out, we haven't had rain in 37 days (nearly a record for this part of the country).

The fruit of the cacao tree does indeed sprout from the side of its trunk, and not from an apical meristem like most plants.

I have jury duty the next three days, but I will try to come up with another challenging question for all of you (that are still out there).

I'm sure we're still out here, Tom, but you come up with some zingers to say the least! (grin)
