The handle that is used to tighten the tool rest base in place comes loose after I tighten it. Does anyone know how to fix this?

What kind of lathe is this? Does it have a tube or a flat bed?

It's a Delta Midi with a flat ground bed. The handle works on a cam action.

I'd try cleaning the cam first, and if that doesn't work try some locktight on the thread of the handle. You might also try bolting it down to reduce vibration in the unit.

Not sure of the configuration of your banjo clamp but there should be an adjustment somewhere for the cam. But could you clarify what you mean by "comes loose" after you tighten it? I presume you're talking about the banjo, the thing the tool rest slides down into.

If by comes loose you mean the banjo moves after you lock it down, then perhaps there's some grease or lubricant on the underside of the ways that interfere with the cam holding against friction. If it's a case of the cam vibrating loose while your turning, then I'd suspect the cam isn't going far enough over center to lock down properly.

Random thoughts to stir conversation.

There is a shaft that goes through the tool rest base. Look at part #72 here:

After I turn the handle to hold the tool rest in place and release it, it rotates back.

It appears that nut #79 may need to be adjusted. Try loosening it a little, I suspect the cam won't go over center because the nut is too tight.
Good luck with it.

Make sure it's all clean under there. If it is, then I think Franks got it. Try adjusting that nut.

Could be. I'd go ahead and do what they did on my old Delta 12" and get two jam nuts so things don't shake loose after they're adjusted. You don't want the cam to go over center, of course, just close enough to wedge the rest to the bed. Pay attention to the positioning of the lever in deciding how high on the cam is enough.

Adjusting that nut should do the trick. You can remove the tailstock from your lathe by loosing the tightening lever and slide the tailstock off the lathe and then set it aside. Next loosen the tool rest base and slide it off your lathe. You can get at that nut easier now. You can also see if there are any other problems with the tool rest base, like cracks or excessive wear. Before putting the parts back on the lathe make sure the ways are clean and not rusted.

If you find the tool rest base is cracked, you can order a new one. The tool rest base for the delta midi model 46-250 is the same as yours and there is one in stock from Sears Parts Direct http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdi ... 217x00001a

Just enter the model 46-250 and then search by model.

Buy a new one only as a last resort. Adjusting the nut should work. Let us know how you make out.
