List as many as you can think of why wood is often superior to steel in
building and furniture making.

Ready, steady, .....steady....GO!!

1. It is easier for ME to saw, glue, screw, and finish than it is to cut with torch and weld things together and paint.

2. Things are lighter in weight using wood than they are using steel.

3. Old school tradition.

4. Generally more pleasing to the eye in wood than steel. (But, I have seen some really nice things done in stainless.)

5. More variety of kinds of wood than metal has.

6. Wood is more common to find around the world than metal and allot easier to come by for most people.

7. Cost.

While some people would consider aesthetics the most, and perhaps the only instance where wood is superior to steel, I can think of a few others:

1. Wooden shovels don't cause sparks when shoveling grain in a grain elevator.

2. Wood is more easily harvested and worked than steel for use in buildings. At least by the common handyman. It's my understanding that pound for pound certain species of timbers are as strong if not stronger than steel.

3. You can burn your mistakes. There's not as much money in scrap iron these days.

4. Wood doesn't have to be finished to look good.

Why do I feel like this is a trick question! (grin)

Easier to work that steel and I can get from my back yard.

Wood smells better than steel! And, no matter what you do with steel, it will never look as warm as wood.
