...square piece of wood, what is the minimum number of 1 inch holes I will have to bore through it to reduce its weight by half?

OK Ralph, here is my incorrect answer -
The thickness and the density of the wood does not mater. We only need to reduce the area of the wood by 1/2.

12 X 12 = 144 sq. inches Reduced by 1/2 would be 72 inches.

a 1 inch hole has an area of PI * R(2) = 3.1417 * 1/4 = .7854.... sq. inches

72 / .7854... = 91.67..... holes

So we need to drill 91 holes all the way through the board and 1 hole .67 of the way through.

Probably wrong but that's my answer. :-D :D

I must admit, I thought 91- 1/2 one inch holes seemed like an awful lot! But, after trying to prove Chuck wrong and not being able to do it,He must be right!!

Don't let it dry out - soggy points are the opposite to Gremlins :D
