I could be wrong, but I think this is 2 bowl gouges

1. with a "traditional" grind and

2. with a "fingernail" or Ellsworth grind

The reason for a fingernail grind is that there is a larger bevel area which allows for a greater surface for "riding the bevel" and also allows you to pull your cuts instead of pushing. The traditional grind still has its use though as it is handy for reaching deeper into cuts such as the bottom of bowls. I did away with my traditional edges and now use a carbide tipped bit in place of a traditional ground gouge on the bottoms of bowls.

You can either buy a traditional ground bowl gouge and reshape it or you can (as of recently) buy gouges pre-ground with the "fingernail" grind

You will need to either get very good at sharpening by eye or use a special jig (I like my oneway wolverine) jig to create a consistant fingernail grind.

I agree with Lawrence. The first is a square grind bowl gouge and the second is a side grind bowl gouge. There seem to be more names for that second grind than just about any other. :) I have seen it called Irish grind, Ellsworth grind, fingernail grind, etc.

Take care
Bob

Lawrence gets the points tonight. These two bowl gouges were purchased with the "traditional" grind and the fingernail grind was applied with the aid of a jig.
